St. Joseph Patrick and Cuthbert of Coxhoe       St. John Fisher of Sedgefield       St. William of Trimdon

Parish Profile

The Parish Priest Writes:

My Name is Father Michael Anthony Hastie I was ordained a Priest on 5th July 1987 in my home Parish of St Teresa’s in Heaton. I am a Priest of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

Five years ago I was appointed as Parish Priest of the two Parishes of St Joseph, Patrick & Cuthbert Coxhoe and St William Trimdon. Two years later Fr Jack Caden the Parish Priest of St John Fisher at Sedgefield decided to retire but to remain living in the Presbytery. I was then asked by Bishop to take on the third Parish of St John Fisher Sedgefield.

This may seem like a tall order but I do have the help and assistance of two retired Priests; Father Peter Smith and Father Jack Caden.

It’s quite amazing that when one looks at the history of our three Churches we see that in the beginning one Priest looked after all three Churches and now all these years we are turning full circle with one Priest serving three Churches.

The whole Area of the Parish stretches from Junction 61 (A177) to junction 60 ( A689) of the A1M in other words from Coxhoe/ Bowburn in the North to Sedgefield at the South as far as the Wynyard Estate. Eastwards we stretch from Bowburn across the Trimdons to the borders of Thornley Parish.

Although they are three distinct Parishes in their own right, As far as possible I try and run the three Churches as one large Parish Community. All in all I cover about 35miles on a Weekend travelling between the three Churches to Celebrate Mass.

You will be most welcome to attend any of the Services in our three Churches and the map should help you to locate us. If you are coming for a weekend to visit Durham Cathedral or travelling further north you may appreciate the chance of attending Mass on a Saturday evening at 6pm at St Joseph Patrick and Cuthbert in Coxhoe. (Just off junction 61 see map.)

Whatever the occasion please feel free to come along to anything happening or just enjoy clicking through our website. Remember to check the weekly Diary to check out our Mass times or our children’s activities page.

St William’s is a Roman Catholic primary school that caters for pupils between the ages of four and eleven. It is situated in Trimdon, near to the city of Durham. There are 124 pupils (full-time equivalent) on the roll of the school: boys and girls. Pupils are organised into five classes, all of which have more than a single age group of pupils. The pupils come from a large rural and semirural area. Around 86 per cent of pupils are brought to school by bus because they live significant distances from the school. St Williams managed to attain the best set of exam results in East Durham in December of last year. In the words of Mrs Doherty our Headteacher “We are a school that works as a school family. Staff and pupils work together so that all of the children have the chance to achieve all they can”. Results showed that 94% of pupils achieved the expected level 4 standard in English and Maths, while 100% of the pupils made the grade in science.

Secondary Schools

There are three Catholic Secondary Schools within the locality serving the Parishioners:

St Bede’s Comprehensive School St Bede’s Comprehensive School

Chaplain: Miss Liz McLeod

At St Bede's, we strive for excellence and aim to help all of our students achieve their full potential. The school is a happy, vibrant community where students work hard in their academic studies and are involved in a wide range of sporting, creative, practical and social activities. We wish to develop the spirituality of our students and the ability to be innovative and to work with independence and initiative so that they can prosper in a rapidly changing world.

At the heart of St Bede's, and underpinning everything that we do, is its mission to witness to Christ and to celebrate each individual's relationship with Christ and with one another in the light of Gospel values.

St Leonard’s is a Catholic School and as such the aims within it are to create an atmosphere of catholic values, attitudes, practices and knowledge such that all children will have the opportunity for their faith to be nurtured. Thus they will be able to widen and deepen themselves as people in preparation for this life and for the life to come.

Chaplain: Awaiting appointment

At Carmel College the development of each individual's potential is paramount; this is given purpose by the college's Mission Statement which is based on Gospel values and thus generates the college's distinctive Catholic ethos as a caring community of adults and young people. The processes of learning embody opportunities for personal fulfilment and for the development of those attributes which help all members of the community to both value and celebrate each other's uniqueness. Guidance and moral principles are emphasised in the Religious Education programme and in daily prayer and liturgy undertaken by all pupils. We accept applications from all schools and all backgrounds.

St Williams Church

Established in 1861 as a mission (now called a parish), St Williams church was built in 1864. It was opened on 17th January that year also as a school, a large curtain was drawn across the sanctuary to separate the classroom from the rest of the church. The first purpose built school was opened on 1904 on Horse Close Lane. This school originally served children from the Trimdons’, Coxhoe, Kelloe, Cornforth, Sedgefield and Fishburn.

The land for St Williams church was given by the Beckwith family and this is commemorated by a large stained glass window above the altar which bears the inscription "for the greater honour and glory of God that there may be piously and lovingly preserved the memory of Gul Beckwith DUC-MIL-EQ-Hanov who died 23rd February 1871 may the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace". The abbreviations mean Gul-William, DUC-General, MIL-Military-EQ-Cavalry, Hanov-Knight commander of the Order of Hanover.

Several changes have taken place around the site of the church over the years, A new presbytery was built in 1953 and this is where resident priests now live. The old presbytery was used as a home for the headmaster of St. Williams school before becoming a parish clubhouse where meetings and a flourishing youth club where held. This old house was demolished in the early seventies and the youth club moved to the old parochial school which stood at the east end of the village just where the road turns to Trimdon Colliery. The meeting room was built onto the church around about 1978 and more major alterations took place with a new sanctuary and a new altar installed. The "new" church was consecrated on 29th October 1992.

The church has extensive gardens which are kept in good order by the local council and the highlight of the garden is a Lourdes grotto which was built in1994 largely due to the efforts of parishioner Mr Joe McGough.

St William was Bishop of York. He died in 1154, his tomb being in the crypt of York Minster.
